I am the manager of a small engineering team. My family will be relocating from Minnesota to Tampa in August for my wife's new job. I am wondering when I should alert my organization and team of my future departure.
Some additional background on my situation:
- My company was acquired by another organization one year ago and moved much of the software development to India.
- I report to the VP of Engineering in India.
- My team focuses on architecture, new product innovation, and production sustainability.
- I am the senior member in Minnesota, with the executive staff in CA.
- I have concerns that my team may fall apart when I leave because of a lack of local leadership.
I appreciate any thoughts. Thanks, Jeff

6-weeks
Hello, Jeff,
Try the cast on how to resign: http://www.manager-tools.com/2006/07/how-to-resign-part-1-of-3
I've had great success using the 6-week guideline even with future employers who push for a speedier transition of 3-4 weeks.
all the best
