Annual reviews - corporate origins?

Does anyone know how annual reviews made it into corporations - it was mentioned that they started in military and then were adopted by the corporations. When did that happen? Are there any papers/ articles about it - very curious.

I don't have any idea where did it orginates, what is importnt hardworking employees benefit from it and their family.

The annual review is very important to assess how did the employee performed, how productive he/she is over the year. I love appraisals!!!
