Feedback

Giving feedback is the most important responsibility of the Effective Manager. It is also the most poorly executed. There are many reasons for this including the fear of emotional confrontations. The Effective Manager avoids such confrontatation by delivering regular, constructive feedback, whether it is positive or negative. The key is to make it routine.

It will assist the Effective Manager to use a framework to construct feedback. Initially, feedback can be prepared in advance but over time the format will come naturally. The Effective Manager Feedback Framework consists of 3 parts:

  1. Describe the specific behaviour. Use words that describe objectively what the direct report did. Not to be included are senses or feelings about a situation.
  2. Describe what happens as a result. Indicate objectively the consequences of the behaviour for the direct report, for the manager, for the team, and for the business.
  3. Ask the direct report how they might behave in future.
